Review: Omega Seamaster - Bond's Timepiece of Choice

Omega’s Seamaster series started in 1948 with the goal of creating the finest diving watch in the world. Today the line is respected the world over for quality, serviceability and style. The Seamaster has also earned a certain distinction among film fans as the “James Bond watch” since its appearance in 1995’s Goldeneye and subsequent Bond movies.

Long before this, however, the Seamaster was well-known for its water resistance and stability under stress. Divers have always appreciated the helium escape valve allowing the equalization of pressure when the watch is worn in pressure chambers for deep diving. The Seamaster is a favorite of sports divers, oil rig workers, underwater construction personnel and others who remain underwater for long periods.

The Seamaster line is divided into the Planet Ocean series, the Aqua Terra series and the 300M series. The crowning achievement of the line is the PLOPROF 1200M, the ultimate diving watch. All selections in the Seamaster line are chronometer quality.

Water resistance varies according to model. The Aqua Terra model has a resistance of 100 meters, the 300M has a resistance of 300 meters and the Planet Ocean series is good to 600 meters. The PLOPROF 1200M is in a class by itself with a water resistance of 1200 meters.

Stability is provided by Omega’s column wheel movement. The silicon balance spring ensures precise accuracy. Power reserves range from 44 to 60 hours except for the 300M Quartz model which has an extraordinary reserve of 27 to 36 months. Planet Ocean, the 300M series and the PLOPROF 1200M have tachymeter bezels while the Aqua Terra series does not.

The Seamaster line encompasses much variation of design. Some models are uncomplicated while others have small second hands or chronograph functions. Stainless steel and rose gold appear frequently in the selection.

A good example of the Seamaster selection is the Planet Ocean Chrono. It has a screw-down crown, a helium escape valve and 600-meter water resistance to facilitate diving. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides for clearer viewing underwater.

Omega has continued its tradition of using a glittering array of celebrity endorsers by selecting the popular Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan to endorse its Constellation chronometer, one of the new additions to the Seamaster collection. This exceptional watch has a stainless steel case and a rose gold bezel surrounding a brown dial. The self-winding movement has the famous Omega precision and accuracy and a 60-hour power reserve.

The PLOPROF 1200M is an extraordinary timepiece with a 55-millimeter width. This includes a crown guard completely covering the crown and a solid metal casing for the helium escape valve. The entire case is a substantial block of stainless steel capable of withstanding enormous pressure. The metal chain bracelet is even more durable than the more common link models. This watch is nearly indestructible to 1200 meters.

All the Seamaster models are still in production, and the future promises to bring many more. Omega always builds on its achievements, and Seamaster is no exception.
